The difference between good and bad link building explained
We often blog about link building and the difference between what classifies as good safe link building and poor quality link spamming, but let’s take a closer look at what we do and don’t do.
If you’re looking for instant quick results, no questions asked then we are not for you.
To understand fully what makes safe link building or more appropriately ‘link acquisition’ you need to also understand what is considered to be black hat. So let’s go in to these in a bit more detail before we go any further.
PBN link building (Avoid these types of links)
PBN or Private Blog Networks are simply a collection of websites/blogs owned by an individual or company with the sole purpose of being able to add outbound links for SEO benefits. To spot PBN sites you need to look at the IP addresses, a tool such as http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/web-sites-on-web-server/ for sites on the same server. Then use a good tool such as Ahrefs (our personal favourite SEO tool) to look at the link quality of each site, relevancy, domain authority and more importantly the on page content and out bound links. Is there a lot of outbound links using money terms in the anchor text such as ‘buy cheap sunglasses here’
In theory there is no reason why you couldn’t have a PBN that delivered high quality unique content for the sole purpose of helping its visitors. But PBN links are now generally classified as spammy. This is only because of the majority of sites owned by a particular individual or organisation create them for link building only. They do not care about it’s visitors.
We avoid these anyway as there are much better and safer ways of getting sites to publish your content, that is more valuable to your audience and website.
SAPE Link Networks
The truth about SAPE link building, i’ve seen it first hand. A new website (2 months old) adds 200,000 back links from 4,000 domains in a short space of time and ranks page 1.
What are SAPE links and are they bad for my site?
SAPE is a Russian link network that has spread like a disease through a cornfield, plaguing everything they touch. They usually include poor quality, irrelevant websites with lots of outbound links. These SAPE links are automated and very easy to acquire.
On the contrary to what you may have heard online about link building being dead it’s really not. We see black hat SEO still happening to this day and still see SAPE links working (short term).
In the long run Google will catch up with your SAPE links and you will fall from grace, hitting the pavement below, blooded and lifeless.
Just avoid SAPE links at all costs, they are completely the opposite of what any SEO company should be doing.
We do not use SAPE links ever.
Web 2.0 Links – these are not the type of links you want
Web 2.0 links are almost like the scum in the bottom of your pond. Very little value, you don’t want them and cleaning them up is a messy job as many SEO’s use them in large quantities so you’re often talking about thousands and thousands of web 2.0 links.
Web 2.0 links became very popular around 2011-2012 and even to this day you can spot link spammers a mile off when their link profile is littered with overused anchor text.
We’ve seen more manual penalties from web 2.0 links from other SEO companies than any other type of link.
Google isn’t stupid it has filters in place to look for these obvious signs of link building to manipulate search results.
The chances are if you’re site has web 2.0 links you’ve already been hit with a manual action penalty or algorithmic penalty by Google. Some SEO’s try and throw Google off the scent by using naked URL or brand match anchor text, but these types of links have virtually no contextual value, they almost always cause serious problems down the road.
